KOLKATA :Flood situation has further deteriorated following heavy discharge of water from different reservoirs in West Bengal. Fresh areas have been inundated in Murshidabad, Bardawan, Howra, Hooghly and Birbhum due to discharge of one lakh ten thousand cusec of water from the reservoir of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee called in the army for rescue operations in worst flood-hit areas on Sunday, as heavy rain in the wake of Cyclone Komen continued to lash West Bengal. Indian Army personnel carried out rescue operations at Jhawdanga village in Purbasthali Block 2 in Burdwan district from their base camp at Panagarh.
Around 450 villagers have been already rescued from the flooded Jhawdanag village were river Bhagirathi is overflowing dangerously. Another 150 villagers are still stuck and the army is carrying out rescue operations
Over 38,000 houses were destroyed, about 2 lakh partially damaged and 5,672 cattle killed, according to government figures, as heavy rain hit 12 districts.
As many as 48 people have died so far in the state as heavy rains battered the eastern parts of the country after Cyclone Komen made landfall on Friday.
Incessant rain Jharkhand for last three days
Twelve of total 24 districts of Jharkhand are witnessing continuous rain for last three days because of influence of cyclon Komen. All major rivers of the state are flowing above danger marks, and few small bridges have been damaged in some parts of the state. In Mandar of Ranchi district, one person died due to wall collapse. Administration has asked all the schools of Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Lohardagga to remain closed today due to heavy rain.
State disaster management department has been put on high alert. All major community centers in affected districts are being readied to function as relief camps if need so arise. Control rooms in each district are being operationalised.
