The Uttar Pradesh government has recommended a CBI probe into the murder of witness Akhil Gupta, in the spiritual Guru Asaram Bapu rape case. An official release issued from the state home department announced in Lucknow this evening. Gupta, 35, was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar in January while he was on his way home from work. Gupta was a cook and personal aide of Asaram Bapu and was considered an important witness in the case.
Mr Gupta was the second of three witnesses killed in the case so far. Six others have survived attacks on them. Earlier this month, witness Kripal Singh was also shot dead in Shahjahanpur of UP.
Deceased Akhil Gupta’s father, Naresh Gupta had sought a CBI probe into the murder of his son alleging that the local police failed to trace the accused in Muzaffarnagar. Talking to media in Muzaffarnagar, Naresh said that he has sent a letter to the Gujarat government, demanding a CBI probe into his son’s murder. He said that local police has failed to trace the assailants even after six months since the incident took place.
