Indian equity benchmarks closed lower for the second consecutive session on Wednesday as rising crude oil prices and selling pressure in heavyweight stocks dampened investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 ended below the 22,850 mark, surrendering early gains before recovering from its intraday lows on buying interest in information technology stocks.
The S&P BSE Sensex declined 143.21 points, or 0.19%, to settle at 73,709.69, while the Nifty 50 shed 77.60 points, or 0.34%, to close at 22,811.35. Over the two sessions, the Sensex lost 1.36%, while the Nifty declined 1.45%.
Investor concerns intensified as Brent crude climbed above $110 a barrel, raising worries about India’s import bill, domestic inflation and corporate profitability. Consumer durables, metal and automobile stocks faced selling pressure, while IT and cement shares bucked the broader weakness.
Bajaj Finance was the biggest drag among the key Nifty constituents cited in the session, falling 3.27%. Axis Bank declined 2.10%, while HDFC Bank slipped 0.71%.
Broader markets underperformed the frontline indices. The Nifty MidCap 150 fell 1.39%, while the Nifty SmallCap 250 dropped 2.26%, reflecting widespread selling beyond large-cap stocks.
Market breadth on the National Stock Exchange remained decisively negative, with 2,988 shares declining, 608 advancing and 102 remaining unchanged.
Crude oil, bond yields in focus
Brent crude futures for December 2026 delivery jumped $2.16, or 1.99%, to $110.95 a barrel, according to the supplied market data. Elevated energy prices are a concern for India, a major crude importer, as a prolonged rise could increase the cost of imports, put pressure on the rupee and complicate the inflation outlook.
The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark government security rose to 7.440%, from 7.391% in the previous session, indicating a decline in bond prices. The partially convertible rupee strengthened to 94.4375 against the US dollar from its previous close of 94.9125.
MCX gold futures for December 4, 2026, delivery fell 0.50% to Rs 1,45,780. The US Dollar Index edged up 0.03% to 101.73, while the US 10-year Treasury yield rose 0.12% to 5.125%, according to the supplied figures.
Global markets mixed amid geopolitical risks
European equity indices advanced on Wednesday as stronger corporate earnings helped stabilise sentiment following two volatile sessions. However, political uncertainty in France and caution ahead of US technology earnings limited gains.
UK consumer price inflation accelerated to 3.5% in September from 3.1% in August, exceeding the 3.4% market forecast. The reading marked its highest level since October 2025, according to the Office for National Statistics.
In Asia, equity markets ended mixed. Japan’s exports rose 16.7% year-on-year in September, extending the growth streak to 13 consecutive months, although the increase fell short of expectations. Exports to the US rose 22.9%, while shipments to China increased 8.6%. Japan’s trade deficit narrowed to 536.6 billion yen.
Overnight on Tuesday, October 20, US markets delivered a mixed performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.02% to 52,495.88, while the S&P 500 rose 0.28% to 7,712.57. The Nasdaq Composite edged down 0.02% to 26,424.82 as weakness in technology stocks offset gains elsewhere.
Healthcare and industrial stocks supported the Dow, while investors continued to assess corporate earnings, technology valuations and the cost of artificial intelligence investments.
US housing data also pointed to weakness. Housing starts declined 5.2% month-on-month in September, while building permits fell 0.2%. Single-family housing starts dropped 4.6% to an annualised rate of 859,000 units, and permits declined 4% to 845,000, their lowest level in three and a half years.
Geopolitical developments remained central to the energy outlook. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions. Indirect negotiations continued through Pakistan and Qatar. US President Donald Trump predicted that the conflict would end quickly and that oil prices would subsequently fall sharply.
Meanwhile, crude prices fluctuated amid conflicting reports on diplomatic progress and continuing concerns over disruptions to energy infrastructure and shipping routes. Corporate earnings, borrowing costs and uncertainty surrounding AI spending are expected to remain key drivers of global market sentiment.
