The Supreme Court has ordered authorities in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, to seal and demolish 16,726 unauthorised structures in Zone-A to ensure public safety. A bench led by Justices J. B. Pardiwala and K. V. Viswanathan is overseeing this contempt petition regarding non-compliance with previous directives on illegal constructions.
The court also sought comprehensive reports on illegal constructions in the city’s three other zones. Furthermore, a judicial commission headed by retired Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia has been formed to investigate the emergence of illegal residential colonies in Uldepur and determine if Meerut Development Authority officials were complicit.
The court also instructed the authorities to continue demolition efforts and file status reports before the next hearing in December.
