Indian benchmark indices witnessed a roller-coaster trading session on Thursday, ultimately finishing largely flat as investors weighed domestic corporate earnings against global macroeconomic signals. Market volatility was amplified by the weekly expiry of BSE derivatives contracts, forcing indices to stage a spirited recovery from their intraday troughs.

The S&P BSE Sensex advanced 113.61 points, or 0.15%, to close at 78,079.96. Conversely, the broader Nifty 50 slipped 40.10 points, or 0.16%, to settle at 24,395.85. Despite the headline indices moving in opposite directions, underlying market breadth remained positive. A total of 2,192 shares advanced on the BSE, while 2,127 declined, and 237 remained unchanged.

The broader markets outpaced their large-cap counterparts, highlighting robust retail and institutional interest down the line. The BSE 150 MidCap Index added 0.29%, while the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 0.09%.

Sectoral Trends & Technical Outlook

Selling pressure was acutely felt across heavy-weight segments, notably metals, private banks, and financial services. However, this downside was successfully counterbalanced by strong buying momentum in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), information technology (IT), and chemical shares.

  • Top Nifty Gainers: Larsen & Toubro (up 1.26%), Eternal (up 1.26%), and TCS (up 1.08%) provided crucial ballast to keep the benchmark afloat.
  • Technical Levels: Analysts note that 24,450 serves as the immediate technical resistance for the Nifty 50. On the downside, 24,300 continues to act as a formidable and crucial support level. Having recovered from an intraday low of 24,311.40, market participants are keeping a close watch on these boundaries.
