IN A MAJOR POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT, leader of oppsition Rahul Gandhi , Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav, congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders were taken into custody by police near the residence of Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi. They were take far away Modal Town and detained.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, whom the government sent to tackle the situation, said Gandhi first demanded a discussion on the NEET paper leak and protests against it in Parliament. The government, Singh said, agreed to this, but then Gandhi added a demand: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. Singh eventually left the protest site, and police detained Congress leaders, including the Gandhis, to end the demonstration that stretched for over two hours.
Earlier in a dramatic show of opposition Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday led Members of Parliament from both Houses to stage a dharna near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation over the alleged use of excessive force by the Delhi Police against students during protests a day earlier.
Addressing the gathering, Gandhi said, “We have marched to Prime Minister Modi’s residence to demand answers for the brutalities inflicted on young students yesterday. The government neither wants to take accountability nor allow a debate on the issue in Parliament.”
Escalating his attack on the Centre, the Congress leader alleged that the government had failed the country’s youth and called for the resignation of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“Prime Minister Modi and the Home Minister must resign for destroying the future of India’s youth,” Gandhi said.
The surprise protest near the Prime Minister’s residence triggered heightened security arrangements in the national capital as opposition MPs sought to spotlight the alleged police action and press for an immediate discussion in Parliament.
