The National Testing Agency (NTA) is exploring the idea of artificial intelligence (AI) in question paper preparation and examination processes to reduce human intervention and strengthen exam security, NTA Director General Abhishek Singh said on Saturday.
Speaking at an event on artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure organised by NCAER, Singh said the agency is working towards creating larger question banks and using technology to minimise direct human access during paper setting.
“One usage of AI that we do very often is how do you ensure that you develop a larger bank of questions and then reduce the human element in setting question papers,” Singh said.
His remarks come amid continuing scrutiny of the agency following controversies surrounding national entrance examinations, including allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in recent years.
According to Singh, excessive dependence on manual processes creates vulnerabilities in high-stakes examinations. He said wider adoption of AI and digital systems could lower the possibility of breaches while maintaining necessary human oversight.
The NTA is also evaluating AI tools to support multilingual translation of question papers in secure, air-gapped environments instead of conventional cloud systems to protect sensitive content.
