United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has said that international law must be followed by all countries without exception, especially during rising global tensions and the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

In a social media post, Guterres stressed that respecting international law is essential to prevent instability, mistrust, and worsening conflicts. He added that in a world becoming more divided, international law is more important than ever, and this is particularly urgent for the Middle East situation.

Guterres also urged all parties to respect freedom of navigation, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, where about 20,000 seafarers are stranded due to the conflict. He warned that disruptions in this key shipping route are affecting global trade, increasing costs, and worsening food insecurity due to impacts on fuel and fertiliser supplies.

Meanwhile, in a statement, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said recent talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad did not reach an agreement but were a positive step toward future dialogue. The UN encouraged both sides to continue such discussions. The UN also called for maintaining the ceasefire and stopping its violations.
