The nation pays homage to legendary freedom fighters – Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev – on their martyrdom day today. Those who were executed in Lahore Central Jail on this day in 1931 by British rulers.
The three revolutionaries were tried for their involvement in fatally shooting a British Police Officer Saundras on the 17th December, 1928 and were awarded a death sentence.
Akashvani correspondents report that the Britishers, after hanging Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, a day before the scheduled date, secretly brought their bodies to the bank of the river Sutlej at Hussainiwala in Ferozepur and unceremoniously cremated them.
A National Martyrs Memorial here depicts their irrepressible revolutionary spirit. Border Security Force, Punjab, in its unique initiative as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, organised Ferozepur-Hussainiwala Border Marathon, here yesterday, to honor the supreme sacrifice of the legendary trio.
Ferozepur Railway Division has started 6 pairs of special Shahidi-Mela trains today to ferry the visitors from Ferozepur Cantt to Hussainiwala and back.
People are visiting the memorial to pay tributes to the Martyrs. A state level programme will be held at the ancestral village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh at Khatkar Kalan to remember the supreme sacrifice of these Sons of the soil for the Nation.”
