Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said today that Moscow will continue observing the missile and warhead limits set under the New START nuclear treaty with the United States, despite the agreement expiring last week. Lavrov told the State Duma that Moscow would maintain the restrictions as long as Washington does not exceed them. The 2010 treaty ended on February 5, leaving the two largest nuclear powers without binding strategic arms constraints for the first time in over 50 years. US President Donald Trump rejected a proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin to extend the limits voluntarily for another year. The treaty’s expiration has raised fears of a potential arms race involving Russia, the United States and China, amid ongoing tensions and the war in Ukraine.
