National Scheduled Castes Alliance President and Bharatiya Janata Party Scheduled Caste Morcha Punjab’s Vice President Paramjit Singh Kainth has welcomed the remarks made during the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) centenary lecture event in Mumbai, recently, where RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat supported conferring the Bharat Ratna on Veer Savarkar.

Kainth said that Savarkar’s case should be seen on the basis of the full historical record, which also includes his recorded reformist views against caste practices. He said that Savarkar, in his writings, talked about ending the orthodox practices that divide Hindu society and he mentioned the “seven shackles,” including untouchability, restriction on dining together and ban on inter-caste marriages, which strengthen social division right from birth.

Kainth said that national recognition of social justice is connected with the constitutional legacy of Dr B. R. Ambedkar. He reminded that Ambedkar was given the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1990 with BJP support at the Centre. He said honouring Savarkar along with Ambedkar gives a clear national message that India’s unity must be based on equal dignity, equal rights, and equal participation.
