BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday visited the grave of his father and BNP founder, former president Ziaur Rahman, after a gap of 19 years, in an emotional moment marked by prayers and silence.

Tarique reached the grave at 4.50pm, accompanied by senior party leaders, and placed wreaths before offering dua and munajat. He stood alone for some time in front of the grave, while only senior BNP leaders were allowed inside the restricted area.

Tarique left his Gulshan area residence in a bulletproof bus and reached the site after nearly two hours, as his convoy moved slowly from Bijoy Sarani amid heavy crowds. He waved to supporters along the route.

Party sources said Tarique last visited his father’s grave on September 1, 2006.

Ziaur Rahman served as Bangladesh’s sixth president from 1977 until his assassination in 1981 and retired from the army as a lieutenant general.
