Voting for the first phase of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections concluded on Thursday across 121 constituencies with a provisional voter turnout of about 65%, the Chief Electoral Officer said.

Voting was largely peaceful, with tight security deployment and EVM–VVPAT use at all booths; authorities reported only sporadic incidents in a few pockets, which were quickly handled by police. Rural areas showed particularly strong engagement while some urban centres recorded comparatively lower turnout. Women’s participation was notable and contributed to the overall high numbers, officials said.

From the Mahagathbandhan, 73 Rashtriya Janata Dal candidates and 24 Congress candidates were in the fray. Among the seven-party Mahagathbandhan, CPI (ML) had fielded its candidates on 14 seats. In the 2020 Assembly elections out of 121 seats 23 were won by Janata Dal (United) and 32 by BJP , Lok Janshakti Party had one seat.

On the other hand the Rashtriya Janata Dal had won 42 seats, while its ally Congress had secured four seats. The Vikassheel Insaan Party had also won four seats. In today’s polling, the key figures were BJP candidates and Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha. From the Mahagathbandhan, Chief Ministerial candidate Tejashwi Prasad Yadav is contesting from Raghopur. The electoral fate of a total of 16 ministers of the NDA government was sealed today in the EVMs.

Leaders of both the ruling NDA and the opposition Mahagathbandhan declared confidence in their performances and called for calm as preparations begin for the next phase. The Election Commission described the day as a robust test of logistics and voter enthusiasm ahead of the remaining rounds.

The first phase outcome sets the tone for an intense electoral contest in Bihar, with party machinery already shifting focus to constituencies that will vote in the next phase. Detailed booth-wise data and the final certified turnout will be released by the ECI in its official bulletin.
