A leading Pakistani human rights activist has been shot dead in Karachi after hosting a talk on allegations of torture in the province of Balochistan. Sabeen Mahmud was shot as she walked home with her mother, who was also attacked. Sabeen had been the subject of death threats before. Pakistani daily Express Tribune reports that Sabeen was shot dead in an act of target killing on Friday night.
Sabeen Sabeen Mahmud was director of The Second Floor (T2F) cafe which organises debates and art events. T2F had yesterday organised a talk on Baluchi nationalists who often disappear in the country’s southwestern Baluchistan province.
Meanwhile Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the killing of its rights activist Sabeen Mahmud who was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Karachi, yesterday, as she was returning home after hosting a seminar about human rights abuses in Baluchistan province. Mr. Shareef has ordered an investigation of the incident.
