Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram expressed concern over state of economy in Maharashtra. Mr. Chidambaram called unemployment the state’s most serious issue during a press conference in Mumbai today.
He presented data on the state’s GDP, fiscal and revenue deficits, and slow agricultural growth. He criticized the government for shifting industries to neighbouring states and highlighted farmers’ losses from the onion export ban. He also condemned the government’s decision to waive 15 lakh crore rupees in loans for industrialists, while offering no similar relief to farmers.
Mr. Chidambaram assured that Congress, through the I.N.D.I.A. bloc, will fulfil the promises made in states like Telangana and Karnataka. During the event, Congress released the ‘Mumbai Nama’ manifesto, which included key promises such as eight drug rehabilitation centres, support centres for women victims of violence, and cancelling the Dharavi redevelopment project.
