A Sharjah-bound Air India flight landed safely at Tiruchirappalli airport on Friday evening after experiencing a mid-air emergency due to a hydraulic system failure.

Flight IX613, which had taken off for Sharjah, declared an emergency shortly after departure when the pilot detected the technical snag. The aircraft hovered over Trichy airspace for over an hour, burning off excess fuel before making a precautionary landing.

Earlier Air India Express flight declared a mid-air emergency over Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu on Friday evening due to hydraulic failure. The plane, which is currently hovering over Trichy airspace, is expected to land in 45 minutes, said the airport director.

The flight, with 140 passengers on board, took off from Trichy airport for Sharjah at 5.43 pm but soon developed a technical snag.

The Trichy airport director said that the pilot had alerted ground control about the hydraulic failure, according to India Today.

Local authorities have assured there is no immediate cause for concern.

Hydraulic failure in a plane happens when the system that uses pressurised fluid to control important parts, like the landing gear, brakes, and flaps, stops working properly.

Trichy District Collector told India Today TV that the airport director conveyed there was no reason to worry and the flight would be able to land safely.

“It is currently circling around the airspace to empty the fuel. As a precautionary measure, we have kept ambulances and rescue teams on standby,” the District Collector said.
