Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered consolation to wrestler Vinesh Phogat after she was disqualified from 50kg Women’s Wrestling Final in the Paris Olympics today. In a social media post, Prime Minister Modi said that the setback is hurtful and he is lost for words to express his despair. He added that wrestler Phogat is a champion among champions and India’s pride who is an inspiration for every Indian. Mr Modi further said that she epitomises resilience and her nature has always been to take challenges head on. He highlighted that everyone is rooting for her and hoped that she will come back stronger from this setback.

Prime Minister Modi has also spoken to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P T Usha and sought first-hand information in the matter and explore the options India has in the wake of Vinesh’s setback. Sources said that Mr Modi has asked the IOA President to explore the full range of options to help Vinesh Phogat’s case. The Prime Minister also asked P T Usha to file a strong protest regarding her disqualification if that helps the wrestler.

Earlier in the day, IOA in its statement informed that despite the best efforts by the team through the night, wrestler Vinesh Phogat weighed in a few grams over the 50kg limit this morning.
