Indian benchmark indices today shed more than 2.5 percent. At close, the Sensex was down 2,222 points or 2.7 percent at 78,759 and the Nifty was down 662 points or 2.6  percent at 24,055.

In the broader market at the BSE, the Midcap index shed 3.5 percent and Smallcap index pluged four percent.

28 out of 30 companies registered losses in the Sensex index. The major laggards were Tata Motors 7.32 percent, Adani Ports 5.93 percent and Tata Steel 5.31 percent. Conversely, the top gainers today were, Hindustan Unilever 0.83 percent and Nestlend 0.61 percent.

In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 20 out of 20 sectors logged losses. The major laggards were Metal 4.73 percent, Services 4.56 percent and Utilities 4.30 percent.

The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, out of 4,189 Companies, shares of 664 Companies advanced, 3,414 declined and 111 remain unchanged.
