Farmers protesting against the new farm laws have rejected the central government’s offer to continue their agitation at the designated protest venue, Delhi’s Burari ground. The Centre on Saturday reiterated its invitation to protesting farmers to discuss their demands with Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on December 3.
“We have decided that we will never go to Burari Park as we got proof that it is an open jail. Delhi Police told Uttarakhand Farmer Association president that they will take them to Jantar Mantar but instead locked them at Burari Park,” Punjab unit president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) Surjeet S Phul told reporters on Sunday.
Phul went on to add, “Instead of going to open jail in Burari, we have decided that we will gherao Delhi by blocking five main entry points to Delhi. We have got four months ration with us, so nothing to worry about. Our operations committee will decide everything.”
Haryana unit president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union, Gurnam Singh Chadhoni had told media outlets earlier in the day, “We do not accept the condition of their (central government’s) proposal. We are ready to talk but will not accept any condition now.”
“The government has invited us to talk with conditions. The environment should be created for a conversation. We will not talk if there are any conditions,” Punjab unit president of the Krantikari Kisan Union, Darshan Pal had added.
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told media outlets on Sunday, “Government has proposed to meet on December 3 for the fourth time. So, talks are already going on, nobody should think the government is not ready for it. Government is open for talks, farmers’ unions should create an atmosphere for it. They should leave agitation and choose talks.”
Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he never alleged that the ongoing farmer agitation is politically motivated. Shah had appealed to the farmers on Saturday to move their protest to the designated venue in Delhi’s Burari.
Hooda slams Khattar for ‘Haryana farmers didn’t participate in protest’ remark, warns of bigger stir
Senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda slammed Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for his remarks that the state’s farmers have not participated in the stir against the new agri laws and warned that if farmers’ problems are not resolved, a “bigger movement” will be undertaken.
“The chief minister should tell whether he does not consider the agitating farmers as residents of Haryana? If the farmers of Haryana are not part of the movement, then who did the government lathi-charge in Pipli? Who are the people who were detained by the Haryana Police before their Delhi march? Who where are the thousands of farmers against whom the Haryana government has filed cases,” Hooda asked at a press conference in New Delhi.
