Over 37 lakh metric tonnes of fish produced in the country in 2018-19. The potential of marine fisheries resources in India’s jurisdictional waters is estimated at 53 lakh metric tonnes.
This information was given by Fisheries Minister Pratap Chandra Sarangi in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. He denied that marine fisheries resources are overexploited.
In fact, there is marginal scope for tapping more fish from the sea, he said.
