Over 100 children dead in Bihar due to the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES)

A PIL has been filed against Bihar CM Nitish Kumar over the death of 109 children. Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey and MoS Health & Family Welfare Ashwini Choubey have also been named in the PIL, reported a news agency  The case will be heard on 26 June.

The Congress hit out at Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday over the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) outbreak in Bihar, saying there is “no work, all talk”.

 “In 2014, 139 children were killed in Muzaffarpur. In 2019, 104 children killed in Muzaffarpur. Same minister, Shri Harsh Vardhan, same reasons, same promises, no work, all talk,” Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in a tweet in Hindi.

Bihar govt decides to deploy additional doctors to provide better treatment to encephalitis affected children. Bihar government has decided to deploy additional doctors at Sri Krishna Medical College Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur to provide better treatment to encephalitis affected children. Chief Secretary of Bihar Deepak Kumar today said doctors from Darbhanga and Patna Medical College Hospital would be mobilized to SKMCH, Muzaffarpur to assist group of doctors there.

In Muzaffarpur hospital, 34 doctors are already pressed into the treatment of encephalitis affected children along with experts and pediatricians from AIIMS, ICMR and other institutions. This was decided in a high level review meeting at Muzaffarpur chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He took stock of the situation due to AES.

He said the 50 years old SKMCH would be renovated and upgraded into 2500 bed hospital which has presently 610 beds. Briefing about slew of decision taken in the meeting Chief Secretary said extensive ORS (Oral Re-hydration Solution) distribution campaign will be run in all households of AES affected area. AIR correspondent reports Chief Minister ordered officials to step up several preventive measures.
