Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today flagged off the inaugural flight from Lucknow to Najaf in Iraq. Speaking on the occasion Mr Singh said that the government wants remotest areas to have air connectivity in the country.

He said UDAN scheme is playing an important role in this field. The Home Minister said the number of airports has reached hundred in the country adding that the government aims to facilitate air travel for every person in the country.

“Lucknow has a large number of Shia population and their demand for this flight was pending for long. Najaf is an Iraqi city which has great religious significance, especially among Shia sect of Muslims. Almost five- and half hour long flight from Lucknow to Najaf will operate on Mondays and Thursdays.

Along with facilitating passengers, the connectivity will increase education and tourism industry in both countries. Rajnath Singh, who is MP from Lucknow, is on a three-day visit to his constituency.

He will inaugurate two multi-level parking which would ease traffic jam in the city. He is also slated to dedicate a sewerage project in the town this afternoon.
