A total of 126 MPs have signed a petition on Monday to call for an early session of Parliament to decide upon who has the majority even as Mahinda Rajapakse took over charge as new Prime minister of Sri Lanka.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said he asked President Maithripala Sirisena to revoke his suspension of parliament and allow lawmakers to resolve an alarming power struggle between the sacked premier and the head of state.
He warned that the crisis should settle through parliament, but if it is taken out to the streets, there will be a bloodbath.
His statement came as Ranil Wickremesinghe in a special address to the nation on Monday called on the public to come out and stand for democracy tomorrow in Colombo amidst a worsening political crisis.
In another development, police arrested MP Arjuna Ranatunga over shooting incident yesterday where 1 person was killed and 2 injured.
Petroleum unions had called an indefinite strike demanding his arrest.
