A mass grave containing skeletal remains of more than 150 individuals have been found so far in Mannar district of Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

The excavations of the site began in June after some skeletal remains were found while digging the foundation for a building.

Professor R. Somadeva, a forensic expert involved in the excavation said that only one-third of the area has been dug so far and more skeletons are expected as the process continues.

The bodies are suspected to be dumped during the three-decade-long LTTE war though the exact period cannot be ascertained without forensic examination.

Mr. Somadeva said, the samples of skeletons will be sent to lab in Florida, USA for its scientific dating.

The skeletons are being kept under the judicial custody of Mannar court. Sri Lanka has already a few mass graves discovered in war-affected areas of north and east in the past.
