At least 53 people were killed in a fire at a shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo, Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said on Monday.
Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said with the recovery of five more bodies from the movie theatre, the overall death toll now stands at 53.
Russian Emergencies Minister, Vladimir Puchkov today said in Kemerovo that 16 reported to be missing after yesterday’s deadly blaze. According to the Investigative Committee, four people have been detained for questioning, including the head of the company that manages the shopping centre.
Fire, which started on Sunday afternoon, had now been extinguished but that rescuers were struggling to reach the upper floors because the roof of the building had collapsed.
The fire started on an upper floor of the Winter Cherry complex shopping mall in central Kemerovo. Twenty people were rescued from the blaze and about 100 were evacuated. The cause of the blaze is not yet known but authorities have launched an investigation.
