At least 40 people were killed and 140 others wounded today when a heavy bomb explosion occurred near the Jamuriat Hospital in Kabul, officials, reports Pajhwok Afghan news.

Nasrat Rahimi, Interior Ministry spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the explosion took place at a police checkpoint near the ministry’s old building, police headquarters and a High Peace Council office.

Wahid Majrooh, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, confirmed 40 people were killed and 140 others injured in the blast, claimed by the Taliban insurgents.

With details of the latest attack in the capital still pouring in, the MoI spokesman said the victims were evacuated to hospital. Some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

A full of explosives ambulance was used to carry out the bombing, Rahimi informed.

The bombing came a week after the Taliban stormed the luxury Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul. More than 20 people including foreigners were killed in that incident.

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, in an email confirmed the blast and claimed many police personnel were killed in the bombing.
