Rain continues to wreak havoc in southern and central districts of Kerala as Cyclone Ockhi intensifies hurtling towards Lakshadweep. The northern districts are also witnessing rainfall and strong winds since evening today. The death toll in rain related incidents in the state reached five as one fishermen rescued by the coastguard died today.
The Thiruvanathapuram city police commissioner said that more than 150 fishermen who were reportedly missing in the sea are rescued by the forces. Search operations for the rest of the missing fishermen combinedly conducted by Naval, coastguard and police forces are in full swing.
But the bad weather is hampering rescue operations. Meanwhile as the sea level has considerably increased ,the coastal regions of the state are in high alert. Many areas in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alapuzha, Kochi are facing sea erosion. Refugee camps are opened in these areas. The shutters of major dams of the state are opened.
The state government said that the all efforts are being made to re establish the rail road connectivity and power supply in the rain hit areas and the state prepared to meet any emergency.
