At least six people have been killed and many injured, some critically in a random shooting spree in Kalamazoo in the US state of Michigan, local media reported. Police said they have a suspect in custody.

Police told local media WOOD8 late on Saturday that the suspect was driving around and randomly shooting people.

“What it looks like is that we have somebody just driving around, finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks,” Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said.

Hours later, police said they had a “strong suspect” in custody. Earlier, police said they were looking for a white male in his 50s.
Four people including an eight-year-old child were shot and killed at a Cracker Barrel restaurant, while a father and son were killed at a car dealership. Three others have reportedly been injured.

The shooting may be related to an earlier drive-by shooting that left one woman wounded at an apartment complex.

The suspect in custody was driving a vehicle that matched the description of that car, the authorities said, and the Chevrolet also appeared to match shots of the vehicle from surveillance video at the Ford dealership.

“It’s very likely this is the person, but we have more work to do to be 100 percent sure,” Chief Hadley said.

He said officers from the Department of Public Safety and deputies from the Kalamazoo Sheriff’s Department spotted the suspect’s car in downtown Kalamazoo, pulled him over and arrested him.

No shots were fired during the arrest, he said.
