Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy has announced that 500 of the state run liquor shops would be shut down with immediate effect.

drinking-liquorHe took charge as the chief minister this morning after winning the trust vote last Saturday. Later, addressing the press, he said total prohibition will be implemented in a phased manner.

He has signed orders for distribution of mopeds for 1 lakh women with 50 percent subsidy with the ceiling of 20,000 rupees per beneficiary this year.

The populist measure was part of the AIADMK election manifesto. He also said under the Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme, expectant mothers would be doled out 18000 rupees each as against 12000 rupees now for the first two live births.

He also announced that the assistance for the unemployed youth will be doubled. 5000 houses for fishermen this year at a cost of 85 crore rupees is the fifth announcement he made today.
