Five people were killed and seven others grievously injured in a high intensity blast at a cracker unit in Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu.
The incident occurred at the cracker unit in a village called Thuruvai in Vanur taluk where the labourers hailing from Sivakasi and Villupuram were engaged in making firecrackers.
The explosions led the building ripped apart and bodies strewn around the premises. Fire service personnel rushed to the spot from nearby Villupuram and Puducherry and retrieved the bodies.
The injured people have been rushed to JIPMER hospital in Puducherry. District collector Subramani after inspecting the unit told media that the cracker unit had valid license till 2018. He said all the cracker units in the district will be inspected and security measures will be reviewed thoroughly.
