Telangana government has decided to enhance relief amount being paid to families of farmers who committed suicide due to farm distress to 6 lakh rupees from the present one lakh fifty thousand rupees. The decision has been taken at the state cabinet meeting held last evening in Hyderabad.
Deputy Chief Minister Srihari informed reporters that the raise in ex-gratia will come into immediate effect. The welfare programmes like financial assistance for young women will be extended to also to the families of farmers who committed suicides. He appealed to farmers not to take the extreme step of ending life.
The Government expressed concern over the suicides due to low crop and indebtedness. Earlier, the government has officially admitted that 141 farmers committed suicides due farm distress and said all the families will be paid exgratia.
