Shiv Sena has come out openly and opposed the Jains for its insistence on Meat Ban during Paryushan. In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamana, Shiv Sena today lashed out at the Jain community over meat ban.
The editorial opined that Vegetarianism cannot be imposed in the name of religion.
The editorial also questioned the timing of ban, and said that Paryushan has been there in the past as well. But meat ban never came into anybody’s mind then.
Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) recently announced suspension of meat sale and shutting down of its slaughter house at Deonar in suburban Mumbai on September 10, 13, 17 and 18 in deference to the sentiments of the Jain community members, who during ‘Paryushan’ even shun all root vegetables.
The ban covers mutton and chicken, and excludes fish and eggs. It also extends to private businesses selling raw meat.
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said that depriving someone of their food in the name of non violence itself amounts to violence.
