With five more deaths today, the toll at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Pediatrics Hospital, known as Sishu Bhawan in Cuttack has gone up to 35 in past 7 days.

The government has ordered the head of the surgery department of Cuttack SCB Medical College to probe today’s deaths.

Following the rising deaths of infants at the state-run hospital, the health department has set up a fact-finding committee, headed by directorate of medical education and training to review the medical history of all critically ill babies who were admitted at Sishu Bhavan since August 20.

Sources said altogether 170 infants have died in the last two months, including 95 deaths in the ICU, since June.

On Wednesday Health and Family Welfare Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak reviewed the situation and announced immediate increase in the number of beds at the special neo-natal care unit.
