China says, it is sending its senior official to visit the United States since President Donald Trump took office. Quoting Foreign Ministry, state news agency Xinhua said President Xi Jinping’s top foreign policy adviser and State Councilor Yang Jiechi is scheduled to meet high-ranking U.S. officials today and tomorrow to exchange views on bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest.

The visit follows a phone call between Yang and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last week, during which the two leaders affirmed the importance of a constructive U.S.-China relationship. Earlier President Trump has said China was cheating at trade and threatened to raise import tariffs.

He also criticized China’s activities in the South China Sea and suggested he might use Taiwan as leverage in negotiations.
