At least 19 people including 5 women died and several others injured in Rajahmundry near one of the Pushkar ghats of River Godavari in Andhra Pradesh when a stampede occurred this morning as people in large numbers tried to get through the entrance gate to the main Pstampedeushkar ghat.

The officials fear that the death toll is likely to rise as some of the injured are in a serious condition. It was in fact asad start as heavy rush of people thronged the venue of Godavari Maha Pushkaralu. The incident occurred when some people tried to climb up a wall to get an early entry. The injured have been taken to Government Hospital in Rajahmundry for medical aid.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu regretted the unfortunate incident and is reviewing the situation from the control room set up at the venue. He has ordered the officials to provide the best of the medical aid for injured people. The Chief Minister appealed to the people to utilise other Pushkar ghats as well instead of thronging to the main ghat.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives due to stampede at Rajahmundry. The Prime Minister discussed the situation with Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu.
