More than 1350 Indians have been evacuated from Yemen and efforts are on to rescue over 2,000 others from various parts of the strife-torn country where situation has deteriorated significantly due to escalation in fighting between warring groups.
Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh, who was overseeing the massive evacuation operation from Djibouti, had also gone to Sanaa, the largest Yemeni city from where Air India was rescuing Indians after getting permission to land.
Singh has come back to Djibouti on Saturday.
Meanwhile, An Indian warship sent to evacuate stranded Indian nationals in Yemen was unable to enter Aden today because of heavy shelling in the port city.
INS Mumbai, one of the Indian Navy’s most powerful warships, was anchored a few kilometres from the coast.
Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj said in a tweet that Indian nationals are being taken by boat to board the ship.
Meanwhile, 322 Indian citizens evacuated from Sana’a to Djibouti have left for home. Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said they will arrive in Kochi airport at 10:30 tonight.
