At least 11 protesters died due to electrocution and another 12 were injured in police firing at Pengeri in Tinsukia district of Assam today. Tinsukia SP Mughdya Jyoti Mahanta said that a section of people gathered in front of police station and demanded that the accused in a murder case should be handed over to them for punishment. The mob tried to attack police station and the security personnel with lethal weapons.
Security personnel have to resorted to open fire first in air and subsequently at the mob to control it. Firing in air snapped an overhead transmission line that caused fire in transformer. Mahanta said that ten persons charred to death following electrocution.
At least 4 cops also sustained injuries. Indefinite curfew has been imposed at Pengeri police station area and the army has been deployed. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has ordered a judicial probe into the incident. Union Sports minister Sarbanand Sonowal has condemned the police firing and appealed all to maintain peace.
