In the US, one person has been killed after the fast-moving Hurricane Helene made landfall in northwestern Florida as a powerful Category 4 storm with maximum wind speeds of 225 kilometers per hour. The U.S. National Hurricane Center called Helene an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm and urged people to stay sheltered. The weather forecaster said it is expected to bring damaging winds and flash flooding to parts of the low-lying state. Hundreds of thousands of people are without power, and roads have been flooded in some areas, with states of emergency declared in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Alabama. However, Hurricane Helene was later downgraded to a strong Category 2 hurricane hours after it slammed into the southeastern US coast.
