Former Union Health Minister and renowned Urdu writer and critic Professor Shakeel ur Rahman passed away last night at a Gurgaon in Haryana. He was 85.

He was union minister in the Chandrashekhar government.

He was born in Motihari, Bihar and studied at Patna University, where he gained a B.A. with First Class Honours, an M.A. with First Class Honours (awarded the Patna University Gold Medal) and a D.Litt.

Shakeel-ur-Rahman has written 25 books and more than fifty plays for the stage, TV and radio.

He has received the “Ghalib Award”, the “Urdu Academy Award”, the “National Award” from India and the “Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi Award” from Pakistan.

He was born in Motihari, Bihar and studied at Patna University, where he gained a B.A. with First Class Honours, an M.A. with First Class Honours (awarded the Patna University Gold Medal) and a D.Litt.

He remained attached to the University of Kashmir as Professor and Head of the Department of Urdu. He also served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bihar and of the University of Kashmir and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
