Lok Sabha Speaker to attend 3rd South Asian Speakers’ Summit in Colombo

Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan will attend the 3rd South Asian Speakers’ Summit on “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” being held in Colombo on 11-12th July. She is accompanied by Mr. Bhubaneshwar Kalita MP, Rajya Sabha and Mrs. Snehlata Shrivastava, Secretary General, Lok Sabha. Apart from India, Presiding Officers from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka constitute the South Asian Speakers’ Forum.

The First Summit was conceptualized in 2016, in Dhaka Bangladesh, with India as a major proponent. The Second Summit was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh in February, 2017. This is the Third Summit of the forum. The delegates, during the Summit, will deliberate on various topics under the overall theme of ‘Promoting regional parliamentary cooperation for sustainable, equitable and green economic growth’.

The Summit will carry forward the consensus arrived at in the historic ‘Indore Declaration’.

During the three Sessions, the delegates will hold discussions on the themes ‘The role of sustainable and green industrialization in the realization of the SDGs in South Asia’, ‘The role of parliamentarians in promoting decent work and safe and secure working environments’ and ‘Parliaments as promoters of social and economic inclusion in South Asia’. Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha will address the Summit and participate in various Sessions of the Summit.
