Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has resigned from his post after 37 years of rule, shortly after lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against him.
Mr Mugabe ruled the country since its independence in 1980. The ninety-three old leader has been the world’s oldest head of state and one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
Mugabe’s resignation comes in the backdrop of overwhelming pressure from the military that put him under house arrest and later lawmakers from the ruling ZANU-PF party and opposition taking up the impeachment proceedings.
According to the constitution, the current vice-president, Phelekezela Mphoko should be his successor. However, a ruling party official, Lovemore Matuke said that recently fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa will take over as the country’s leader within 48 hours.
