India began its Doubles campaign in the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the third Grand Slam of the season, in London today.

India’s Purav Raja and Fabrice Martin lost an excruciating five-set battle to Mirza Basic and Dusan Lajovic to make an early exit from the Wimbledon championships. The Indo-French pair was staring at the barrel as they trailed by two sets but put the match on even keel before eventually tumbling 2-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 9-11 in three hours and 37 minutes.

Serving at 9-10, Raja and Martin saved two match points but their opponents latched on to the third to claim a memorable win.

In the Women’s Singles, Venus Williams defeated Alexandra Dulgheru 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Serena Williams will be meeting Viktoriya Tomova later today.

In Men’s singles, the match between record eight-time winner Roger Federer and Lukáš Lacko is underway. Marin Cilic will take on Guido Pella later today.

Rohan Bopanna, Divij Sharan and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan with their partners, and the team of N. Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan will begin their challenge later.

World number one Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Garbine Muguruza recorded first round victories yesterday, while Russia’s Maria Sharapova made a shock exit.
