“Rights of Members in the House Will Be Protected ”

Newly elected Speaker of Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr Om Birla today stressed the need to strengthen the democratic system in the country in the true spirit. Talking to media persons in Parliament campus, Mr Birla “We have to work for a democratic system in the true spirit of the Constitution, rising up to the hopes and aspirations of the people towards whom we all are committed”.

Mr. Birla said that India was the largest democracy of the world and 91 crore people, including 44 crore women, have reposed their faith in democracy by enthusiastically coming out to vote in even harsh weather conditions.

Mr Om Birla said that the rights of Members of Parliament in the House would be protected under the prescribed rules and procedures.

Emphasizing on transparency and accountability in democracy, Speaker said that the protection of the dignity of the Parliament was the pre-requisite of a parliamentary system. He said that the first time Members would be given sufficient opportunity to express their views on the floor of the House.

Underlining that the Media has an important role to play in a parliamentary system, he urged the media persons to take note while reporting of the purposive debates and discussions for which the Members work hard. This, he stressed would further motivate the Members and also enhance the dignity of the House.

The Speaker stressed upon the imperative of strengthening the Parliament Library through technological advancements and digitization. He assured that taking a cue from the best libraries across the world, efforts would be made to improve both the working and the services being offered by the Library.

Mr Birla stressed upon the importance of discussions which take place in Parliamentary Committees in further streamlining the working of the Parliament. He also assured that the Committee system in the Parliament would be strengthened so that executive accountability could be ensured.

Earlier, in the morning, Mr. Birla performed yoga in Parliament House along with Union Ministers, 134 Members of Parliament, Officers of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats and other dignitaries. On the occasion he stressed upon the role Yoga plays in the holistic development of the nation and its citizens.
