CBI today told the Supreme Court that it is investigating former Congress Finance Minister P Chidambaram for the clearance he gave to Malaysian firm Maxis to buy 100 percent of Aircel. CBI also said, it had made this known to BJP leader Subramanian Swamy when he asked about the issue.

The BJP MP said, Mr Chidambaram illegally granted Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance to the 3500-crore rupee Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006.

Swamy had filed a petition in the apex court on the issue and last month was asked by it show some concrete documentary proof of Mr Chidambaram’s role in the alleged illegality.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has submitted to the Supreme Court a sealed envelope containing the status report of the investigation into the controversial acquisition of Aircel by Maxis.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for 2nd of next month.
