Venezuela has declared a national emergency amid reported attacks by the United States. Venezuela’s government has accused the United States of attacking civilian and military installations in multiple states after at least seven explosions and low-flying aircraft were heard in the capital, Caracas.
The attacks come amid the US military targeting the drug-smuggling boats. Yesterday, Venezuela said it was open to negotiating an agreement with the US to combat drug trafficking.
A CNN team has witnessed several explosions in Caracas, Venezuela and reported some areas of the city were without electricity. The first blast was recorded at approximately 1.50am local time on Saturday (0.50am E.T.).
Venezuela’s government condemned what it said was a “very serious grave military aggression” by the US against multiple parts of the country after explosions were reported in the capital Caracas and other locations early on Saturday.
In a statement, the government accused the US of carrying out an attack on Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira.
President Nicolás Maduro has signed a state of emergency and ordered all national defense plans to be implemented “at the appropriate time and under the appropriate circumstances,” a statement from the government read.
It also called on Venezuela’s social and political forces to mobilize and defend the country.
