Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari has been convicted by a Varanasi court in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the 1991 Awadhesh Rai murder case. The quantum of punishment will be announced later today.
In August, 1991, Congress leader and brother of former MLA Ajay Rai, Awadhesh Rai, was shot dead outside Ajay’s house in Varanasi. Ajay lodged an FIR against Mukhtar Ansari, Bhim Singh and former MLA Abdul Kalim.
In April this year, an MP/MLA court in Ghazipur convicted Mukhtar Ansari in connection with the 2005 kidnapping-murder case of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai.
Mukhtar Ansari was sentenced to 10 years in jail and slapped with a fine of 5 lakh rupees. Mukhtar Ansari, an MLA from Mau in Uttar Pradesh, is facing several criminal cases, including that of murder and abduction.
