sikh-policeThe New York Police Department will relax its uniform policy to allow its Sikh officers to wear turbans and maintain beards. New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill announced, the measures are taken to promote inclusiveness and encourage the minority community members to join the force.

There are about 160 Sikh officers currently in the ranks. Sikh Officers Association has welcomed the move tweeting thank you. Sikh advocacy group says, it will send a strong message that there should be no discrimination against members of the community, which has contributed significantly to the city and the country.
