US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth fired two additional senior Army leaders, David M. Hodne and William Green Jr., in a sweeping leadership shake-up after removing Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, underscoring growing tensions within the Army’s top ranks. The Army chief normally serves a four-year term. Randy George, a career military officer who graduated from the West Point military academy, was nominated for the role in 2023 by former President Joe Biden.
General Hodne, who had only recently been promoted in October, was leading the Army’s Transformation and Training Command, a key four-star role focused on modernisation and doctrine. Major General Green served as the Army’s top chaplain.
The removals come amid a broader pattern of senior military officials being dismissed or sidelined in recent months, raising concerns among Army leadership about stability and continuity at the highest levels.
The Defense Department did not elaborate as to what prompted these developments, though The New York Times reported, “The tension with Mr. Hegseth was not rooted in substantive differences over the direction of the Army, military officials said. Rather it is the product of Mr. Hegseth’s long-running grievances with the Army, battles over personnel and his troubled relationship with Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll, the officials said.”
