US President Donald Trump met Pope Francis at the Vatican today for a short private audience on the third leg of his overseas trip. Mr Trump and Pope Francis spoke privately at the Apostolic Palace. The President and the Pope discussed a range of issues of mutual concern.
Later today, Mr Trump will hold talks with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni. The Trump team is also due to fly to Brussels today for meetings with European Union and NATO officials before returning to Italy for the G7 summit in Sicily scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

First lady Melania Trump, wearing a black lace dress and veil, also exchanged a few words with the Pope, who drew on her Slovenian heritage to make a personal connection.
“What do you give him to eat, potizza?” the Pope asked the first lady, referring to a Slovenian treat.
