United State and China have agreed to maintain pressure on North Korea to make later nuke free. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi have agreed to continue pressuring North Korea until the country is nuclear-free.
Pompeo and Wang, who also serves as State Councilor, held a joint news conference after their meeting in Washington on Wednesday.
Asked about the US-North Korea summit planned for June 12th in Singapore, Pompeo expressed hope it would transform a global challenge that has been threatening the world for a long time.
He said they are committed to maintaining pressure on North Korea until they see the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Wang said China is committed to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and that China looks forward to seeing the meeting take place as scheduled and be successful.
Wang added it is necessary to address the legitimate concerns of North Korea at an appropriate time.
The US has decided not to invite China to take part in military exercises in the South China Sea, citing China’s militarization of man-made islands there.
Wang said the decision is unhelpful to mutual understanding between China and the US.
He claimed that China’s deployment is on a much smaller scale than the US, and that it’s for necessary defense purposes.
Asked about an American diplomat in China having suffered mild brain trauma, Pompeo expressed concern and described it as a serious medical incident.
He said he and Wang discussed how they can figure out what happened to ensure that something like this does not happen again in China.
